Headlamp
1 min read

Headlamp is a Kubernetes UI focused on extensibility and user experience. It can run as a desktop application, as an in-cluster web UI, or both.

Headlamp adapts its interface to the permissions available to the current user through Kubernetes RBAC, making it suitable for shared clusters where users should only see and operate on resources they are allowed to access.

Features

• Web and desktop Kubernetes UI
• RBAC-aware views and actions
• Plugin system for extending the UI
• Custom branding and adaptable user experience
• Can be deployed in-cluster or used locally against unrelated clusters
• Official Kubernetes SIG UI sub-project

Installation

Desktop

On macOS:

sh
brew install --cask headlamp

On Linux via Flatpak:

sh
flatpak install flathub io.kinvolk.Headlamp

In-cluster

Headlamp can be installed into a Kubernetes cluster with Helm:

sh
helm repo add headlamp https://kubernetes-sigs.github.io/headlamp/
helm install my-headlamp headlamp/headlamp --namespace kube-system

It can also be applied directly with kubectl:

sh
kubectl apply -f https://raw.githubusercontent.com/kubernetes-sigs/headlamp/main/kubernetes-headlamp.yaml

Use Cases

• Inspecting Kubernetes workloads, services, and cluster resources through a graphical interface
• Providing a web UI to users while preserving RBAC restrictions
• Local desktop management of multiple clusters
• Building Kubernetes-specific UI extensions through plugins
